Quawan’s family reported him missing on October 30th, in which the Baldwin Police Department did not issue an Amber Alert and instead assured his family that he was ‘probably at a football game’. Upon learning that their son had been picked up the day he went missing and taken to a nearby home, Quawan’s parents contacted the authorities in neighboring Iberia Parish to involve them in the search. Quawan had been picked up by Ms. Janet Irvin and her 17-year-old son, but it is unclear when, why or how Quawan left the Irvin home as neither Ms. Irvin nor the Baldwin Police Department responded to requests for comment.
Within hours of being notified that Quawan might be in their jurisdiction, Iberia Parish sheriff’s deputies discovered the child dead in a sugar cane field more than 20 miles from his home, his face badly disfigured. Although the preliminary report from the Iberia Parish coroner listed the cause of death as “likely drowning”, the nature of his disappearance and injuries to his face prompted several family members to suspect foul play.
While the Charles' family awaits the results of an independent autopsy, a separate and unbiased investigation MUST take place. The effort shown by local officials trying to find him when reported missing and the lack of transparency while investigating is not enough. Quawan “Bobby” Charles and his grieving family deserve answers and fair justice. Something hateful has happened and those responsible need to be held accountable.
Quawan “Bobby” Charles, 15-years-old, was known as a quiet teenager with a subtle sense of humor that showed the more he got to know someone. He had seven siblings and had recently adopted a dog to join their family home in Baldwin, Louisiana.
